Students will prepare a Christmas and Spring Musical. We encourage families to invite friends to attend. Students learn how to make a community event successful through diligence, planning, working together and practice. Students not naturally interested in music can also participate behind the scenes with things like costumes, lighting, sound, set design, backstage management and more.
Preschool through 2nd grade Students learn how to navigate on the computer while also practicing the skills students are learning in the classroom. Participating in fun and educational games and activities not only helps the students practice their math, reading, and cognitive skills, but also helps them learn the basics of computer skills like using a mouse, navigating websites and software, and learning different keys and their use on the keyboard.
Starting in 3rd grade, students learn to transition from educational games and drills to learning different software skills. Keyboarding has been an important focus over the years during computer time. Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing is the curriculum we use starting in 3rd through 5th grade to teach proper fingering. In the 4th grade through middle school, we slowly transfer the focus from the skills learned in Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing, to other activities and programs on the computer. During computer time, we encourage students to use proper fingering whether they are using Microsoft Word to type a paper or journal, Power Point creating a slide show, or on the internet entering a web address. We also spend time creating brochures, newsletters, and flyers on Microsoft Publisher.
Downers Grove Christian School values the arts. We are committed to encourage students to discover their gifts and creativity. Students in kindergarten through eighth grade participate in weekly art class. In the spring, there is an art show where all the students’ work is showcased. Winners of the art show participate in the Annual Art Show.
Our focus in physical education at DGCS is to encourage every child to have a love of being active and to take care of the bodies that God has given them. While learning a variety of sports and physical activities, we promote sportsmanship, positive attitude, and learning how to love being active, regardless of the children’s skill level. Students learn soccer, football, volleyball, basketball, badminton, hockey, softball, and a variety of indoor and outdoor favorite games.
