Sixth Grade

A Structured Environment to Explore Their World

A note from Junior High teachers, Judy Newhall, Pat Quinn, Leah Slagle, and Isaac Soriano

We are excited to work together with your sixth grader to help them explore their expanding academic world! We know that sixth grade is a year of transition as students adjust to a period schedule to help them better prepare for high school; we’re excited to guide each student’s growth in personal responsibility, social integrity, and decision-making.

As students transition to junior high, we focus on hands-on experiences that bring core subjects like Math, Language Arts, Science, and History to vivid life. Each fall we take a two-day Outdoor Education trip where students explore the natural world around them through a scientific lens. They will build academically on this trip throughout the rest of the year in their lab work and other science curriculum.

Experiential learning comes alive in various Research Projects throughout the year on topics like The Egyptians, The 1800s, Birds, and Sea Animals.  Students will work on an English Research Paper, Create A Book Mosaic, Math and Science Labs and our Riddle of the Week.

We will dive deeply into the literary world, giving students the opportunity to strengthen reading and interpretation skills; they will lead their own book discussions with classmates and use art to explore themes in the novels we read.  Each spring, students get to discover new potential hobbies and skills through electives like woodworking, baking, or photography.

Six graders participate weekly in Computer Science, Spanish, Physical Education, Art, and Music — each is invited to participate in Band.

Our curriculum is designed to take learning to the next level as students begin to identify the areas of learning that most interest them. It is a privilege to be their teachers along this journey into discovering what the Lord has in store for them!
