A note from our Kindergarten teachers: Kristen Alvarado and Barb Kennedy
At Downers Grove Christian School, we are excited to partner with you and your kindergartener as they launch their academic career. To better suit each child’s unique needs at this stage of development, we offer full day kindergarten.
Kindergarten is a time for growth and exploration as students build the foundational skills they’ll use in elementary school. Our classroom is set up to address each child’s individual needs and prepare them spiritually, academically, and emotionally for their educational journey. As such, we focus on creating a nurturing, caring, cooperative environment where children learn both individually and in groups.
Students focus on the core subjects of phonics, reading, numbers, math, handwriting, along with art, physical education, music, and computers at an age-appropriate level. We use the Bible to illustrate our lessons and of course to teach God’s truths about living kind, loving and respectful lives.
As part of the full day program students receive extended instruction time on topics and activities centered around the application of what they’ve learned in the core academic subjects of the day, alongside additional reading time, learning centers, art, music, and computer classes.
Our Kindergarteners participate in Music, Art, Computer, Spanish and Physical Education each week, along with the same special classes as the rest of DGCS children. Through exciting field trips and guest teachers, we bring community heroes and professionals to life.
