Learn, Create, Perform: Our Instrumental Music Program

At Downers Grove Christian School, our Instrumental Music Program invites students to explore and develop their God-given musical talents through Beginning Band and Concert Band. Students in fourth grade and above are welcome to join, fostering skills in both individual musicianship and ensemble performance within a welcoming and engaging environment.

Beginning Band & Concert Band

Our band program emphasizes the fundamentals of playing and performing in a group. Through guided practice and consistent instruction, students learn essential techniques for ensemble performance, gain confidence, and have the opportunity to express their faith through music. Band students work towards performances in our Christmas and Spring concerts, where they showcase their progress for family and friends.

Band Commitments:

• Students are encouraged to provide a functional band instrument or can receive information on options for renting or purchasing through local providers.
• Regular practice is essential for growth and success in the band.
• Performances take place outside regular school hours, providing a meaningful opportunity to share their work with the school community.

Music Class Activities

Music education at DGCS spans a rich variety of activities designed to cultivate creativity, technical skills, and a deeper understanding of worship through music.

• School Musicals: Students participate in two annual musicals, bringing stories to life through song, drama, and teamwork.
• Orff and Recorder Instruction: Elementary students engage with the Orff-Schulwerk approach and recorders to build foundational music skills in a fun, hands-on way.
• Music Appreciation & Music Worldview Studies: Students in junior high study music history and develop an understanding of how music shapes and reflects Christian values.
• Musical Concepts & Vocabulary: Instruction includes musical theory, concepts, and vocabulary, strengthening students’ understanding of music language.
• Guided Instruction: Lessons integrate visual, audio, and kinesthetic elements, tailored to various learning styles.
• Biblical Integration: Each music activity is an opportunity for students to understand and express biblical principles, emphasizing the joy and purpose of using their talents for God.
