First Grade at DGCS: A Year of Growth and Discovery
Is Your Child Ready to Learn and Grow?
Welcome to First Grade! We are thrilled to partner with you and come alongside your student as they begin their journey in elementary education. Our first-grade year at Downers Grove Christian School is centered on several key pillars: understanding God’s love and His plan of salvation, fostering personal responsibility, encouraging independent work habits, and building a solid foundation in reading, math, and basic computer skills.
Foundational Pillar: God’s Love and the Plan of Salvation
Our year is rooted in discovering God’s unconditional love for each of us. Students learn about the plan of salvation on a personal level, setting the stage for their spiritual journey and growth. Through daily Bible lessons and open discussions, we help each child understand how valued they are in God’s eyes.
Focus on Personal Responsibility
In First Grade, we emphasize personal responsibility in both academic and social interactions. Students are encouraged to be responsible in their school habits and to treat their classmates with kindness and respect. This focus helps them develop essential character traits that will guide them throughout their education and beyond.
Building Foundational Academic Skills
Our first-grade curriculum is designed to strengthen foundational skills in:
- Reading: Students build upon their kindergarten literacy foundation, developing confidence in reading comprehension and phonics.
- Mathematics: Core math concepts, including addition and subtraction, are introduced through engaging activities that encourage problem-solving and critical thinking.
- Technology: Building on their kindergarten skills, students participate in age-appropriate technology programs, gaining familiarity with basic computer skills in a safe and structured way.
Enrichment through Specials and Field Trips
Your child will also have the chance to explore a wide range of interests and talents. Each week, our first graders participate in Music, Physical Education, Art, and Computers, allowing them to discover and develop new skills. Additionally, our exciting field trips and visits from guest speakers introduce students to community heroes and professionals, bringing learning to life.
Anticipating Growth Together
This year is a time of significant growth and discovery for your child. We are excited to see how they develop spiritually, academically, and socially during this important first-grade year. Together, we will encourage their curiosity, guide their learning, and support them as they grow in faith and knowledge.
Looking forward to an exciting year of learning and discovery with your child!
