A Structured Environment to Explore Their World

We’re thrilled to partner with families as we guide sixth graders through a year of academic exploration and personal growth! Sixth grade is a meaningful time of transition, as students adjust to a period schedule and take on new responsibilities, preparing for junior high and beyond. In this year of discovery, our focus is on helping students grow in personal responsibility, social integrity, and decision-making, all within a supportive and structured environment.

Hands-On Learning and Academic Exploration

In 6th grade, students engage in hands-on experiences that bring Math, Language Arts, Science, and History to life. Each fall, our Outdoor Education trip offers a two-day immersion in the natural world, where students conduct scientific explorations that connect with ongoing science labs and lessons throughout the year. Experiential learning extends to research projects on fascinating topics such as ancient Egypt, the 1800s, birds, and sea animals, allowing students to investigate, create, and present their findings. Through activities like the Riddle of the Week, English research papers, and book mosaics, they develop research and critical thinking skills.

Deepening Literary Understanding and Creative Expression

Our curriculum emphasizes reading comprehension, literary analysis, and creative exploration. Students engage in book discussions they lead with classmates and use art to interpret themes in the novels they read. This deep dive into literature strengthens their interpretation skills and fosters a love for storytelling and thoughtful expression.

Enriching Activities and Skill Development

Sixth graders explore a variety of interests and develop practical skills through electives each spring, which may include woodworking, baking, or photography. They also participate weekly in Computer Science, Spanish, Physical Education, Art, and Music, and have the option to join the band, expanding their horizons both creatively and intellectually.

Nurturing Faith and Future Possibilities

At DGCS, we see 6th grade as a year to help students discover the areas of learning that inspire them most while growing in faith and character. Our teachers consider it a privilege to support each student’s journey and to help them uncover the talents and purposes God has planned for their lives.
