Preparing Eagles for Flight

Eighth grade is a pivotal year for your child, as it marks both an academic and spiritual milestone. Our goal is to ensure each student is fully prepared, both academically and personally, for the challenges high school will bring. We’re excited to partner with you in strengthening their skills and character as they step toward this new chapter.

Growing in Faith, Character, and Knowledge

Our 8th-grade curriculum centers on Christ and living in response to His sacrifice, preparing students spiritually, academically, and personally for young adulthood. Through a robust academic program, students build critical skills that equip them for success in high school and beyond.

Academic Preparation for High School

In Algebra, students cover advanced topics like rational equations, quadratic equations, and functions. In science, they explore subjects such as astronomy, geology, and meteorology, understanding God’s hand in the universe and the natural world. In history, students investigate America’s founding and the Civil War, using readings, discussions, and engaging projects to bring history to life.

Eighth graders also delve into classic literature, examining themes such as compassion, family, and human relationships from a Christian perspective. Through these discussions, students develop both analytical skills and a deeper understanding of God’s design for human interactions.

Experiential Learning and Service Opportunities

We believe learning extends beyond the classroom. Through our annual science fair, students apply scientific methods to questions of interest, showcasing their findings. Field trips, such as to the Argonne National Laboratory, provide real-world connections to their studies. Service projects like Feed My Starving Children and Operation Christmas Child allow students to serve others and demonstrate Christ’s love in action. These experiences culminate in the memorable eighth-grade trip—a milestone in their DGCS journey.

Weekly Enrichment and Extracurricular Activities

In addition to core subjects, eighth graders participate weekly in Computer Science, Spanish, Physical Education, Art, and Music, with the option to join the Band. These activities allow students to explore new interests, build teamwork skills, and round out their education.

Prepared for High School and Beyond

At DGCS, we’re dedicated to preparing students academically, spiritually, and personally for the journey ahead. As they “take flight” from junior high, we know they’ll carry with them a strong faith foundation, a love of learning, and a readiness to face new challenges with confidence and integrity.
